What is a Herxheimer response?

A Herxheimer reaction (sometimes called a “Herx reaction”) is a temporary inflammatory response that can occur after treatment begins for certain infections, particularly spirochetal bacterial infections such as Lyme disease and syphilis. As large numbers of these organisms are killed, inflammatory substances and immune signaling molecules may be released, temporarily producing or worsening symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, nausea, fatigue, and muscle aches. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28077740/

If a Herxheimer reaction occurs, symptoms are usually temporary and often resolve within 12 to 24 hours. Management is generally supportive and may include adequate fluids, rest, and appropriate treatment for fever or discomfort. One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming that feeling worse always means the treatment is failing. Sometimes it may simply mean that your body is responding to the rapid breakdown of infecting organisms. However, a Herxheimer response should never be assumed to explain every new symptom. Severe or persistent symptoms should always be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional. Learning to recognize the difference between a temporary die-off reaction and a treatment that is causing harm is an important part of using any antimicrobial protocol safely.

Hydrogen Peroxide (HP)

Why is Hydrogen Peroxide (HP) included here?

1. Hydrogen peroxide has generated considerable scientific interest in cancer research because of its complex role in cellular oxidation and reduction (redox) processes. Laboratory and preclinical studies have investigated whether selectively increasing hydrogen peroxide within cancer cells may contribute to cancer-cell death. Researchers have also studied hydrogen peroxide’s effects on apoptosis, oxidative stress, cellular signaling, and tumor metabolism. Much of this research remains experimental and should not be interpreted as evidence that drinking or nebulizing hydrogen peroxide has been proven to treat cancer in humans. 2. Hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizing agent, meaning it destroys infecting microbes through oxidation. Like chlorine dioxide, hydrogen peroxide gives up one oxygen atom that damages the outer membrane of bacteria, viruses, fungi, molds, and parasites, rendering them unable to function or reproduce.

3. Some practitioners may use 3% food-grade hydrogen peroxide in a nebulizer for approximately 5–10 minutes up to four times daily. Some protocols also include adding 1–4 drops of Lugol’s Liquid Iodine to increase antimicrobial activity especially for sinus and upper airway infections.

Healthy cells contain antioxidant enzymes, including catalase, which rapidly converts hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. Research has found that catalase expression or activity is reduced in some cancer cells compared with normal cells, although this varies considerably among different cancers. Why is Hydrogen Peroxide Controversial?

1. Healthy human cells contain protective antioxidant enzyme systems, including catalase and glutathione peroxidase, that help protect them from excessive oxidative damage. Hydrogen peroxide can also damage microorganisms through oxidative mechanisms, although different microorganisms vary considerably in their susceptibility and antioxidant defenses. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33995399/

2. One of the biggest safety concerns involves concentrated hydrogen peroxide, including products sold as “35% food-grade hydrogen peroxide.” Despite the term “food-grade,” this concentrated solution is highly corrosive and can cause serious injury if swallowed, inhaled, splashed into the eyes, or improperly handled.

However, supporters point out that the treatment protocols use very small amounts that are heavily diluted in distilled water before use.

For example:

  • 3 drops of 35% HP in 6 ounces of distilled water equals approximately 0.10%
  • 3 drops of 35% HP in 8 ounces equals approximately 0.08%

Hydrogen peroxide has well-established antimicrobial properties. 3. Some believe the low cost of hydrogen peroxide has limited commercial interest in conducting large clinical trials. Others argue that insufficient evidence currently exists to recommend it as a standard cancer treatment.

For that reason, examine the available evidence from multiple sources before drawing your own conclusions.

4. Several laboratory studies have suggested that hydrogen peroxide may have potential in cancer research.

One study published in the Journal of Cancer Science and Therapy reported inhibition of lung cancer cell growth.

Another study published in Cancer Letters demonstrated hydrogen peroxide-induced apoptosis in cultured breast cancer cells.

These findings are encouraging, but additional human clinical research is still needed to better understand both safety and effectiveness.

5. IMPORTANT

Do NOT take Vitamin C or other antioxidant supplements while actively following a hydrogen peroxide protocol. Supporters of these protocols believe antioxidants may neutralize hydrogen peroxide and reduce its oxidative activity.

Hydrogen peroxide remains one of the most controversial therapies in alternative healthcare. Some people dismiss it without ever studying it. Others accept it without asking enough questions. I encourage you to do neither.

Read the research. Listen to physicians and scientists on both sides of the discussion. Consider the clinical experiences that have been reported, but also recognize the need for additional high-quality human studies.

Chlorine Dioxide (ClO₂)

What is it?

1. Chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) is a simple molecule produced by combining 25% Sodium Chlorite (NaClO₂) with either 4% Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) or 50% Citric Acid. After approximately 30 seconds, the solution turns amber as chlorine dioxide is formed.

2. Chlorine dioxide is a powerful oxidizing agent. During oxidation, it damages the outer membrane, proteins, and DNA of bacteria, viruses, fungi, molds, and parasites, preventing them from functioning or reproducing. What is Iodine?

1. Iodine is an essential trace mineral belonging to the halogen family of elements, along with bromine, chlorine, fluorine, and astatine. Although only small amounts are required, iodine plays an important role in normal metabolism and is absolutely necessary for the production of thyroid hormones.

2. Because the body cannot manufacture iodine, it must be obtained from the foods we eat or from supplementation. Good dietary sources include kelp, cod, oysters, eggs, dairy products, and Greek yogurt.

1. Iodine is included because adequate iodine levels are essential for normal thyroid function, metabolism, immune function, and healthy cellular activity.

How have we become so iodine deficient?

3. People living inland generally consume less seafood than those living near coastal regions and may therefore receive less iodine from their diets.

Suggested Starting Dosage

Many iodine users begin with 50–100 mg daily for approximately two weeks.

Some experts feel that the discomfort is being caused by the elevated level of bromine being released into your system by the higher doses of Iodine. Why is Aspirin included here?

1. Aspirin is derived from compounds related to acetic acid (found in vinegar) and salicylic acid, which naturally occurs in willow bark as well as many fruits and vegetables. Research has shown that aspirin can inhibit NF-κB, an important protein involved in inflammation and cancer progression. Some physicians recommend chewing aspirin at the first sign of a suspected heart attack because chewing non-enteric-coated aspirin can produce a faster antiplatelet effect than swallowing it whole. A suspected heart attack is a medical emergency—call 911 immediately. Discuss with your physician ahead of time whether taking aspirin while awaiting emergency medical care is appropriate for you. 4. Aspirin has been studied for its potential role in reducing inflammation and vascular events that may contribute to cognitive decline. However, a large randomized controlled trial involving more than 19,000 older adults found that daily low-dose aspirin did not significantly reduce the risk of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, mild cognitive impairment, or cognitive decline. 5. Aspirin remains an important medication for many appropriately selected individuals, particularly those with established cardiovascular disease. 6. How much Aspirin should I take?

Low-dose aspirin, generally in the range of 75–100 mg once daily, is commonly used for long-term antiplatelet therapy when aspirin is medically indicated. Aspirin may be one of the most inexpensive medications ever developed, yet it continues to surprise researchers with the number of biological pathways it appears to influence. Whether its greatest value ultimately proves to be in protecting the heart, reducing inflammation, lowering cancer risk, or a combination of all three remains an active area of research.

Why is Coconut Oil included here?

1. Coconut oil contains approximately 50% lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid with well-documented antibacterial and antifungal properties. Lauric acid has been studied for its ability to help reduce a variety of infecting microbes.

2. Coconut oil may also improve oral health when held in the mouth for several minutes before swallowing (“oil pulling”). This practice may help reduce harmful bacteria that can migrate from the mouth to other areas of the body, including the heart and brain.

The Seed Oil Controversy

1. Industrially processed seed oils—including corn, soybean, canola, cottonseed, sunflower, palm kernel, and safflower oils—are commonly extracted using the chemical solvent hexane.

2. These oils are high in polyunsaturated fats, which are chemically less stable than saturated fats and are more susceptible to oxidation. Some researchers believe this oxidation contributes to chronic inflammation and may promote conditions favorable to tumor development.

3. Several researchers have suggested that reducing highly processed seed oils while increasing healthier fats such as coconut oil, butter, tallow, olive oil, avocado oil, and lard may help reduce inflammation and improve overall metabolic health.

4. Vitamin E has been suggested by some researchers as one way to help protect polyunsaturated fats from oxidation. However, avoiding highly processed seed oils altogether remains the preferred strategy for many clinicians who support metabolic approaches to health.

Saturated Fat and Heart Disease

The relationship between saturated fat and heart disease has remained one of the most debated topics in nutrition.

In 2015, the British Medical Journal published a review concluding that saturated fats were not associated with cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, stroke, or Type 2 diabetes.

Many supporters of metabolic nutrition therefore recommend obtaining fats primarily from sources such as coconut oil, butter, tallow, lard, olive oil, and avocado oil rather than highly processed industrial seed oils.

Coconut Oil vs. Cancer

1. Research dating back to at least 1945 has suggested that highly unsaturated processed seed oils may promote tumor formation, while saturated fats such as coconut oil have demonstrated protective effects in various experimental models.
