A Great Divide in Cancer Care

One of the biggest debates in cancer research today centers on a simple but important question: What is the primary cause of cancer?

For many years, cancer has been viewed primarily as a genetic disease—one caused by mutations in the DNA of our genes thus they are genetic. However, a growing body of research suggests that cancer may instead begin as a metabolic disease, with persistent problems continuing to occur in the mitochondria—the tiny structures inside our cells that produce energy.

Emerging evidence suggests that cancer is primarily a mitochondrial metabolic disease, challenging the traditional view that it is caused solely by genetic mutations. According to this perspective, disruptions in the normal metabolism in cancer cells—including altered glucose metabolism, commonly known as the Warburg effect—play an important role in the development and progression of many cancers.

Many researchers believe that persistent broken metabolism in the mitochondria occurs first, with genetic mutations developing later as a consequence of these metabolic disturbances. Other researchers continue to view genetic mutations as the primary cause of cancer. Throughout this website, I explore the scientific evidence supporting the metabolic perspective so that you can better understand this important area of ongoing cancer research.

Research indicates that cancer may primarily be a mitochondrial metabolic disease rather than solely a genetic one. This perspective challenges the traditional view that focuses on genetic mutations as the main cause of cancer.

A growing body of scientific research supports the view that cancer involves significant metabolic changes within cells, particularly in the mitochondria—the structures responsible for producing cellular energy. Researchers have identified alterations in glucose metabolism, mitochondrial function, and other metabolic pathways that may contribute to the development and progression of many cancers.

Throughout this website, I examine these findings in greater detail and discuss how they may influence both conventional and natural approaches to cancer care. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the science behind the metabolic theory of cancer, along with references to many of the key studies for those who wish to explore the evidence more deeply.
